Queen Elizabeth II dies: India declares Sept 11 a day of national mourning

NEW DELHI: India has declared September 11 (Sunday) as a day of national mourning following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, according to a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Friday.

“On September 11 (Sunday) the Indian flag will be flown at half-mast in all government buildings and no entertainment events will be held,” according to the statement, Sputnik reported.

In addition, all events in conjunction with Gibraltar’s National Day, which is the celebration of the first sovereignty referendum in 1967, will be cancelled.

According to the statement, as a mark of respect, a 96-das cannon fire will also be held.

Kenya and the United Arab Emirates also reportedly declared a day of mourning from Sept 9 to 12.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said the country will also mourn from 6 am to 12 midnight on Sept 9. Kuwait, Brazil and other ‘Commonwealth realms’ will also mourn.

Meanwhile, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark also canceled several events that were supposed to be held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of her reign.

Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday.
