‘Split sea’ in Pangkor: Firefighters advise visitors to always be vigilant
The phenomenon allows people to cross to Giam Island from Teluk Nipah Beach just by walking.
IPOH: The phenomenon of receding sea water at Giam Island in Pangkor Island at the end of January is indeed one of the attractions for tourists to the resort island every year.
The phenomenon caused the sea to split in two, allowing people to cross to Giam Island from Teluk Nipah Beach by walking.
The phenomenon is scheduled to occur twice this year, on January 21 to 25 and on February 19 to 22.
The director of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Perak, Azmi Osman, meanwhile, asked the public to be vigilant and refer to relevant agencies, especially the Marine Department, before visiting there.
He said, accurate information on sea tides and weather changes must be obtained before exposing oneself to any risks and dangers.
“We already know that the phenomenon that happens on the island will later attract the attention of visitors to walk to the middle of the ocean.
“Therefore, we give an early warning to always be aware of the current situation of the sea level, and most importantly get accurate information from the relevant departments and agencies,” he said.
He said this when met in the Fire Hazard Elimination Inspection Campaign in conjunction with the Chinese New Year festival season at the Kwan Yin Tong Temple near here on Thursday.
In the meantime, Azmi thanks to the Perak JBPM has implemented a contingency plan and security level in the tourist focus area through the Pangkor Fire and Rescue Station (BBP).
According to him, the step was taken considering that there had been a previous case of loss of life involving visitors who were trapped when the phenomenon occurred.
“It is possible that we will place our team with basic rescue equipment to be ready because in the event of an unwanted incident, we can deal with it more quickly,” he said.
