Experience the magic of Broadway with MPO’s 25th Anniversary Concert

MPO presents West Side Story, Chicago, Phantom of the Opera, and more at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas

The Malaysian Philharmonic will be performing a series of evergreen classics from Broadway productions as part of its 25th anniversary.

THE Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special concert themed ‘MPO Goes Broadway!’. It will be held on January 28, at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas in KLCC.

Under the direction of Gerard Salonga, the concert will feature a selection of evergreen Broadway classics that will showcase the glitter, drama, dance, and magic of some of the most beloved musicals of all time.

The programme for the night will include a 25-minute suite from West Side Story entitled Symphonic Dances, which provides a ready-made synthesis of Bernstein’s ‘poem to New York’ in all its energetic and dynamic moods.

The MPO will also perform Kander’s excerpts from Chicago, which holds the record as the longest-running show to have premiered on Broadway.

Wildhorn’s Someone Like You taken from Jekyll & Hyde, which closed after more than 1,500 performances on Broadway since 1997, will also be part of the evening’s repertoire.

Audiences will also be mesmerised by Hamlisch’s What I Did For Love taken from A Chorus Line, which ran over 6,000 performances on Broadway since its opening in 1975.

Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera Suite, a work for the timeless tale of intrigue, murder, and seduction, will also be performed. The musical opened in London in 1986 and has been seen by over 100 million people worldwide in 27 countries.

Schönberg’s suites from Miss Saigon and Les Misérables will also be part of the evening’s repertoire. Miss Saigon won Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Original Score, and was translated into 12 languages in 25 countries.

Les Misérables holds the record as the longest-running musical ever in London with nearly 15,000 performances and counting.

Lending their vocals to the beautiful orchestral MPO’s Broadway interpretations are talented singers Izen Kong, Sean Ghazi, YiLing Chaing and Ida Mariana. Join the MPO and the guest singers in this exhilarating and emotional concert at DFP.

Ticket purchase information is available on the MPO website or at the box office centre at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas in Kuala Lumpur.
