One in four employees in Germany worked from home last year

WIESBADEN: Working from home is more common in Germany than in most European Union (EU) countries, according to official data released on Wednesday, reported the German News Agency (dpa).

A quarter of the working population worked from home at least part of the time last year, according to the Federal Statistics Office.

The figure shows a slight increase compared to the previous two years. In 2024, the rate was 24 percent, while in 2023 it was 23 percent.

By comparison, in 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic, only 13 percent of the working population in Germany worked from home occasionally or more often.

Last year, the percentage of people working from home in Germany was slightly higher than the overall EU average, at 23 percent of all working-age residents aged 15 and over, according to the data.

As in previous years, the highest rate was recorded in the Netherlands, with 52 percent of the population working from home at least part of the time.

The lowest rates were recorded in Romania and Bulgaria, with only four percent each working from home.

One major factor influencing the rate of working from home in Germany is a person’s employment sector.

Work-from-home arrangements are widespread among information technology (IT) service providers, as well as the administration and management consulting sectors, each recording rates of nearly 75 percent.

Statisticians say working from home is particularly popular among age groups who need to balance work and family responsibilities.

In Germany in 2025, the highest rate of working from home was recorded among those aged 35 to 44 (30 percent), while for the 25 to 34 age group it was 28 percent.
