Michelle Yeoh is from Malaysia, not Hong Kong, says actress Chapman To

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh’s success at the 2023 Oscars continues to be a topic of discussion among film fans and netizens around the world.

The discussion is not only directed at Michelle’s artistic journey record track, on the other hand, there are also parties that draw attention to the background of the actress including her origins.

Among the personalities who touched on the issue was the famous actor from Hong Kong, Chapman To Man Chak who insisted that the Best Actress Oscar 2023 is a Malaysian and not from other countries.

Therefore, at the same time, Chapman To warned the Hong Kong government not to prosecute Michelle from that country.

“A reminder to the Hong Kong government. Michelle Yeoh is a Malaysian. Do not take advantage and claim that she is a Hong Kong citizen,” said Chapman To in a statement shared on his social media account, on Monday.

Yesterday (Monday) Michelle made the most glorious history in her artistic career when she was named Best Actress at the 95th Academy Awards (Oscars 2023).

At the glorious event held at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles, United States, the Malaysian-born actor won the award through his performance in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Michelle’s success marked her name as the first actress from Asia to be named Best Actress in the history of the Academy Awards throughout the 95 years of the organization.

Chapman To’s statement was a reaction to the congratulatory speech issued by Hong Kong’s Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Kevin Yeung to Michelle after the Ipoh, Perak-born actress won the same award at the Golden Globe event.

While describing Michelle’s award as well-deserved, Yeung also described the 61-year-old actress as a ‘Hong Kong actress’.

“Michelle Yeoh forged a name in the Hong Kong film industry before expanding her artistic career internationally with her hard work and extraordinary talent.

“We are very proud to see Hong Kong actors continue to shine in the global film industry,” Yeung was quoted as saying.
