Chinese New Year: Ensure electricity, gas safety before returning home

People returning to their villages in conjunction with Chinese New Year are advised to prioritize electricity and gas safety.

SHAH ALAM: The Energy Commission (ST) reminds people returning to their villages in conjunction with Chinese New Year to prioritize electricity and gas safety by practicing the safety tips given.

He explained that if safety is taken for granted, the probability of people being exposed to the dangers of electricity and gas is high.

According to the statement, electrical safety that needs to be taken into account is to use electrical equipment and decorative lights that are approved and have the ST-SIRIM safety label.

“Secondly, make sure the electrical equipment is in perfect condition and avoid repairing damaged electrical equipment yourself.

“In addition, do not overload the socket with excessive electrical equipment or with a high load.

“Fourth, don’t press the electrical switch with wet hands and make sure all unnecessary electrical switches and equipment are turned off if you return to your village or on vacation,” he said on Friday.

He added that people are also not advised to hang festive decorations on poles or power lines or electrical installations.

The Residual Current Device (RCU) should also be tested by pressing the ‘T’ test button at least once a month.
“If the PAB works properly, it will be installed and the electricity supply will be cut off immediately.

“A well-functioning PAB will be able to protect users from electric shock if there is a current leakage to the ground.

“If the PAB does not work or is damaged, seek the services of an electrical contractor registered with ST to replace the PAB or any electrical inspection/wiring work at home,” he explained.

For gas safety, ST recommends to always check the cooking gas stove to ensure that it is in good condition without any smell or gas leakage.

He added that the public also needs to use gas stove equipment that is approved and has the ST-SIRIM safety label, in addition to making sure that the gas stove equipment is in good condition and safe.

“Make sure the gas cylinder valve is closed when you return to the village or leave the house, do not put a hot pan/pot on the gas cylinder and make sure the gas cylinder is vertical when cooking.

“Get the services of a gas contractor registered with ST for gas piping repair work at home,” he explained.
