KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO remains committed to the stability of the Federal Government and will continue to respect the Unity Government Agreement signed after the 15th General Election (GE15), said UMNO Information Chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
He said the agreement was signed to form and guarantee the stability of the Federal Government throughout the 15th parliamentary term with cooperation between different parties based on a spirit of mutual respect without eliminating each other’s identity, orientation or political stance.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said any differences that exist at the Federal level need to be managed maturely so as not to affect the administration and the people’s confidence.
“Our priority must be to ensure that the Federal Government remains stable, the reform agenda is implemented and the well-being of the people is always prioritized until the end of the term,” he said in a statement here today.
Regarding the claim that UMNO betrayed the People’s Justice Party (PKR) in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, Azalina said the matter should not be assessed in isolation or solely based on political decisions at the state level.
He said such allegations needed to be assessed calmly, responsibly and based on facts.
Azalina said Malaysia is a Federation and political cooperation at the state level does not necessarily have to copy the results of the same political coalition formula at the Federal level.
He said each state has its own mandate and political reality, with the people at the state level also having aspirations and the right to determine their chosen representatives and government through the democratic process.
Therefore, he said differences in strategy or cooperation in an election did not in itself prove that the Unity Government Agreement at the Federal level had been violated.
Meanwhile, Azalina said the discourse on the Unity Government at the Federal level should focus on the ability to implement commitments to the people.
“The Unity Government must continue to implement its commitments to the people throughout the remaining term of the 15th Parliament as promised in the manifestos of their respective political blocs in the 15th GE,” he said.
