PH now in opposition in Melaka, 5 assemblymen withdraw support

AYER KEROH: Pakatan Harapan (PH) Melaka is no longer part of the Melaka State Government administration after the coalition decided to withdraw support following the approval of the Melaka State Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026.

The decision saw PH representatives, including four DAP state assemblymen (ADUNs) and an Amanah representative, relinquish all positions in the state government, including the positions of Exco, Deputy Exco, Deputy Speaker and appointments related to state administration.

Melaka DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong said PH cannot continue to be in government after rejecting the motion brought by the state administration because it contradicts the political principles held by the party.

“We have taken a clear stance rejecting this bill because it contradicts the principles of electoral democracy. Therefore, we need to leave the Melaka State Government.”

“We cannot, while rejecting the government’s proposals, at the same time continue to be in government and use all government facilities.”

“That’s not fair,” he said at the Second Sitting, Fifth Term of the Fifteenth Melaka State Legislative Assembly at the State Legislative Assembly, in Seri Negeri, here, today.

He added that all PH elected representatives who relinquished their positions will remain as assemblymen and will carry out their role as the opposition in the Melaka state assembly.

Khoo said the decision was not due to current political developments or preparations for the State Election (PRN), but was instead made based on the party’s stance on the issue of appointed assemblymen.

He stressed that DAP and PH are of the view that assemblymen should be elected by the people through elections, not appointed.

“If the state government needs expertise from professionals or experts in a particular field, they can be appointed as advisors without having to be given the position of assemblyman.”

“When someone is appointed as an ADUN, they have the right to participate in debates and vote in the State Legislative Assembly.

“That contradicts the principles of electoral democracy that we uphold,” he added.

Following the decision, he announced that all PH representatives holding positions in the state administration would resign.

It involves one State Government Exco, two Deputy Exco, the Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly as well as all local authority council members and state government political appointees from DAP.

With this decision, PH returned to its role as the opposition in Melaka after previously participating in the state administration in the spirit of the Unity Government.

Although PH Melaka has decided to withdraw support from the Melaka State Government, the move is not expected to directly affect the position of the state administration since Barisan Nasional (BN) still has the majority of seats in the State Legislative Assembly.
