A total of 17,108 Raingers, 45 songs played live, the result of 20 years of work in a band called Hujan.
Only one Noh Salleh. One AG. One Am. One Hang Dimas and one Izzat.
However, those who only posted songs on MySpace around 2005 – 2006 have made quite a proud history, not just for the country’s music industry, but for Malaysia as well.
At the Hujan XX: 20 Years of Rain concert organised by Icon Entertainment, the band didn’t have to sell the Hujan brand too ‘hard’ to attract crowds of fans or Raingers, with 17,108 people filling the Hockey Stadium, Bukit Jalil, to capacity.
Just by announcing that Hujan would be celebrating their journey on the music scene for two decades, the Raingers came down like water pouring from the sky.
And the way the red umbrella marked XX was promoted, which was chained together by celebrity friends, proves how much Hujan has always been a source of pride and affection.
If the writer can use some market language and metaphors, this is what I want to write about the Rain XX Concert: 20 Years of Rain.
This concert is wild, uncontrolled, free of discipline or rules, crazy, full of emotions, personal and brings the heat of young people who have produced works with ‘fire’ and their eruptions ‘exploded’ at this concert.
As Noh said, the concert that night was like a gig – referring to a small-scale live performance that usually involves indie bands.
Gig culture was clearly visible when Raingers opened their own mosh pits to form large circles while dancing randomly at several fairly crowded spots, a rare sight in the organization of a large-scale concert.
But Hujan managed to create history and a gig moment that is quite famous among 90s music fans in concert.
Ironically, Hujan also doesn’t seem to be trying too hard to claim they are the champions – an indie band that has successfully established itself in the commercial world.
But through the works without rules made except for writing lyrics that touch the diversity of life, the melody that is the heart and the ‘barbaric’ playing of each of their members is the most powerful bullet that makes two decades of Rain very ‘golden’.
Rain, even by non-local standards, has presented visual and audio performances that are international in nature.
For fans who come not to accept ‘it doesn’t matter if the rain plays like ‘hampeh’, ‘sounds like a barrel’ or ‘Noh, hold up the microphone’, the Hujan XX Concert: 20 Years of Rain presents a spectacular atmosphere .
With the musical arrangement that you can hear, you can tell it was done with dedication and love and then translated into ‘crazy’ live on stage, a stage that wasn’t noisy but was quite significant with ‘troublemakers’ in music for 20 years, everything was extraordinary.
It’s worth buying a ticket, it’s satisfying to be stuck and almost stepped on in the mosh pit .
Wild and without rules, Hujan is when their works, from the chaotic to the ‘heavy’, are played on stage in three neatly arranged segments, proving that they are true musicians who create works from the heart to touch millions of hearts with the personality of the music or the work itself.
That’s not even mentioning their guest artists, among whom were Datuk M. Nasir’s appearance on the song Kembara, Monoloque, which was described as “without this figure, there would be no Hujan in the industry”, comrades in arms on the same musical wave, Yuna, ‘the wild one’ DJ Uno, Fyn Jamal and Akeem Jahat, and a string of songs wrapped in various ‘tricky games’, Hujan XX Concert: Hujan 20
Tahun must be used as a benchmark for the organization and how seriously artists take their artistic work.
Most impressively, from the seats while enjoying the performance, Hujan showed the industry that their strength, apart from the quality of their work, was their ‘rock n roll’ skills and not caring about Western ‘rock stars’ who were well-behaved in Asian culture.
Each member of Hujan has a personality and charm that is captivating enough to captivate Raingers, not only because of Noh’s vocals but also because of the flamboyant AG, Hang Dimas, Izzat and Am’s undeniable ‘love’ with their respective instruments.
In a night with a charming sky, Hujan really celebrated their 20 years with full of emotion.
Noh repeatedly tells anecdotes about how Hujan was hated, but thanks to the love of the Raingers who always supported them, the band lasted for two decades.
Of course, the appearance of Hujan at a time when many people did not understand and differentiate between gig musicians and commercial artists carved out a personal moment for Raingers.
The proof behind the colorful light bracelets worn by Raingers is that they sang Hujan’s works from the most iconic ones such as Aku Scandal, Pagi Yang Gelap, Bila Aku Sudah Tiada, Ahmoi Chantek, Empayarmu, Dugaanku to songs that only loyal fans follow and own all of Hujan’s albums such as DBS, Ke Selatan or Perindu Kalbu with great care and enthusiasm.
Hujan, you guys are amazing. Thank you for being here and growing up in Malaysian music.
Thank you for being a wave that provides diversity and quality to Malaysian musicians who are not ‘just that’.
And I conclude this article with this argument. Like it or not, here are the simple facts. Hujan is the most
influential indie music anarchy in Malaysia this century.
