Penang, Langkawi seal the UNESCO Sisterhood Island MoU

GEORGE TOWN: Penang and Langkawi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Sister Island to strengthen tourism growth and prospects for cooperation between the two destinations.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Exco Yeoh Soon Hin said the signing of the MoU was the result of his previous mission when he represented the state government in signing a Letter of Intent (LOL) with the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) on June 20.

“This MoU shows the progress that Penang has made in our efforts to establish more network relationships with tourism partners, including leading tourist destinations such as Langkawi.

“Both destinations have UNESCO sites, which is basically the essence of the MoU. We look forward to intensifying cooperation with Langkawi in various aspects, from tourism promotion, connectivity, cultural exchange to geotourism,” he told reporters after signing the MoU in here today.

Yeoh said it was important for the two destinations to take advantage of their respective UNESCO inscriptions, not only for the authorities, but also for industry players and visitors.

The MoU was signed by Penang State Government Deputy Secretary (Management) Datuk Ahmad Rizal Mohd Hanapiah and LADA Chief Executive Officer Nasaruddin Abdul Muttalib and witnessed by Penang State President Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak.

Meanwhile, Yeoh said Penang will continue its efforts to penetrate new and existing tourism markets, including business tourism, to ensure the state remains at the forefront of the industry in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
