AYER KEROH: Melaka Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, stressed that PH’s decision to withdraw from the state government administration will not affect political stability or the position of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government in Melaka.
According to him, the collaboration with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in Melaka after the 2021 State Election (PRN) was established to reflect the spirit of the Unity Government at the Federal level.
“I am taking the approach of understanding that exists in Putrajaya so that the ornament of understanding can be created in Melaka without forming a government with any party to support the formation of a Barisan Nasional government in the state of Melaka.”
“What I emphasize is that their position is complementary to the unity depicted in Putrajaya and taking that spirit, we have succeeded in carrying out government administration in harmony and without prejudice until today,” he said.
He said this at a press conference at the Second Session, Fifth Term of the Fifteenth Melaka State Legislative Assembly at the State Legislative Assembly, in Seri Negeri, here, today.
Commenting on DAP’s action in protesting the amendment to the Melaka State Constitution to introduce appointed State Assemblymen (ADUN), Ab Rauf said he respected the party’s stance and would not turn differences of opinion into hostility.
He also assured that all administrative matters, the implementation of development projects and the delivery of services to the people would continue as usual.
Commenting further, Ab Rauf described the relationship between the state government and DAP as never being based on any official agreement.
“Whatever decision is made by DAP friends to disagree with this proposal and announce their withdrawal from the government, I cannot prevent their party’s decision because their presence in this government is like getting married without a qadi, getting divorced without a talaq,” he said.
Previously, the Melaka State Assembly passed the Melaka State Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 which allows for up to seven appointed assemblymen to be created to strengthen the state’s legislative institution by bringing in expertise and experience from various fields.
According to Ab Rauf, the amendment does not affect the position of the 28 elected assemblymen, but rather only complements the existing composition to improve the quality of debate and state policy formulation.
