Daro New Town Extension Phase II To Spur Economic Growth, Says Awang Tengah

MUKAH, June 10 (Bernama) — The New Town Extension Phase II project in Daro, scheduled for completion in November, is expected to serve as a new catalyst for economic growth in the district and strengthen its potential as a development and investment hub in Sarawak’s coastal region.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the project, implemented by the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA), forms part of the state government’s efforts to promote planned and sustainable rural socio-economic development.

“The development is aimed at creating a new economic activity centre that will stimulate local growth, empower entrepreneurship and attract more investment to Daro,” he told reporters after visiting the project site here today.

Awang Tengah said Phase I of the project had been completed and was already operational, while Phase II comprises 20 two-storey shophouses, 10 two-storey mini-shops, 10 cottage industry units, a public toilet, electrical substation, open spaces and parking facilities.

He said all 20 shophouses and 10 mini-shops had been fully booked, reflecting strong demand and Daro’s growing potential as an emerging economic centre.

According to him, Daro’s rapid development has been driven by improved connectivity through new roads and bridges, which have enhanced mobility and facilitated economic activities.

He said the infrastructure upgrades would create broader development opportunities in small towns such as Daro while increasing their attractiveness to investors and entrepreneurs.

Awang Tengah also commended the project’s design and planning, noting that it emphasises functionality, accessibility and landscaping while incorporating recreational areas and open spaces linked to the waterfront.
