KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 250,248 Unifi Mobile customers, comprising individual customers and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), were found to be affected in a data breach involving their contact information, said Telekom Malaysia (TM).

The type of data involved involved customer names, phone numbers and emails, the company said in a statement today. It does not involve other information.

“TM confirms that the breach has been contained and measures have been taken to minimize the potential impact on these 250,248 customers. Certain affected customers have been notified. Customers who have not received any notification are those who are not affected,” he said.

TM has also reported the matter to the relevant authorities, namely the National Cyber Control and Coordination Centre, the Personal Data Protection Department, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM).

The telecommunications company said it was notified of a data breach on Dec 28 involving a limited amount of Unifi Mobile customer information.

Although additional security measures have been implemented to isolate the risk and protect its customers, TM said that customers did not experience any service disruption in the incident.

“TM is monitoring closely and is conducting additional assessments. We advise customers to take extra precautions when receiving communications from unknown parties, as well as secure their online information at all times,” he said.

TM also stated that the privacy and security of its customers remains the company’s highest priority and that it takes the matter seriously.

“We will continue to strengthen and ensure our data security framework, policies, systems and processes are always at the benchmark of Bank Negara Malaysia’s Risk Management in Technology (RMiT) and ISO27001 standards, as well as other global standards to prevent such incidents,” he added.
