Traffic flow to the East Coast is severely congested, the North and South are starting to get congested

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic on the country’s main highways experienced unusual congestion tonight due to a drastic increase in vehicles wanting to take the last chance to enjoy the 50 percent toll discount.

A spokesperson for the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) said the worst congestion was detected towards the East Coast involving the route from the Gombak Toll Plaza to Bukit Tinggi.

Congestion in the area was detected starting before the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) exit and traffic flow increased significantly after breaking the fast,” he said when contacted by Bernama tonight.

He said that for the North direction, traffic was reported to be moving slowly, but was under control on the Sungai Buloh to Rawang, Slim River to Sungkai and Bukit Tagar to Lembah Beringin routes.

The congestion trend in the North is also still influenced by the residual effects of the fatal accident that occurred this afternoon on the Tapah to Gopeng route, in addition to the increase in vehicles on Permatang Pauh towards Sungai Dua.

For the route heading south, LLM reported that traffic had started to slow down at several hotspots, including Bandar Baru Nilai to Seremban Rest and Treatment Area (R&R), Bandar Ainsdale to Senawang and Pedas Linggi to Simpang Ampat.

LLM expects traffic flow to continue to peak until midnight tonight as people chase the toll discount offer period which will end at 11.59pm.

Apart from the discount factor, many consumers are reported to have just started their journey tonight as most of the employment sector officially begins its holiday tomorrow.

In this regard, LLM advises users to ensure that their Touch ‘n Go card balance and vehicle fuel tank are sufficient to avoid any difficulties when stuck in traffic.

“Users are also reminded to always maintain a safe distance between vehicles and be aware of any obstacles ahead to avoid any unwanted incidents,” the spokesperson said.

So far, weather conditions along the main highway have been reported to be good, except for heavy rain that occurred in several locations such as Gombak, Tapah and Nilai this afternoon.

The latest traffic information is available via the LLM toll-free line 1-800-88-7752 or via navigation applications to help users plan their journeys more effectively.
