Some Amazon Go convenience stores in the US will be closed
SAN FRANCISCO: Amazon announced that the company will close several Amazon Go convenience stores in the United States (US).
“Like any other physical retailer, we have also periodically evaluated our store portfolio and decided to take optimization steps.
“In this case, we have decided to close a small number of Amazon Go stores in Seattle, New York City and San Francisco.
“We remain committed to the Amazon Go format that has operated more than 20 stores across the US and will continue to study the locations and features that best suit customers while continuing to expand our Amazon Go stores,” Xinhua reported citing the company’s statement.
With the closing of the four stores in San Francisco on April 1, Amazon will close all of its physical stores in the Bay Area, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The first Amazon Go stores opened to the public in 2018 allowing shoppers to pay automatically via smartphone.
Last year, the company announced that it would close more than 50 of its physical retail stores.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced plans to lay off 18,000 workers.
