‘Seniman’ file a police report for the ‘Mentega terbang’ film

KUALA LUMPUR: The Association of Malaysian Artists (Seniman) has urged the police to investigate the content of the film ‘Mentega erbang’ which is alleged to have seditious content.

According to its Secretary General, Hafiz Nafiah, his party has made a police report for the authorities to carry out an investigation under the Sedition Act 1948.

“In the police report, I would like the police to investigate this issue under the Sedition Act 1948, because there are (things) that are inciting in the film.

“Many of the clips circulated do contain sedition, so it must be investigated under the Sedition Act.

“This Sedition Act has many sessions and the punishment is quite heavy. So we urge the police to investigate under the Sedition Act 1948,” he said when met in front of the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD) on Friday.

He said the action was taken after the artist received various complaints from the community and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

“We have received various complaints from the community and NGOs regarding the film which touches on the sensitivity of the Islamic religion.

“Even though we look at this as if there is nothing, but it is serious, the complaints we receive are also not from members.

“They asked if Seniman didn’t do anything? This complaint also came from NGO leaders who want us to defend Islam,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hafiz explained that his party will send a letter to the Deputy Home Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah regarding the matter.

“I will personally send this report to the Deputy Home Minister. Now it is under the jurisdiction of the police, so we want the ministry to look at this issue seriously because the Film Censorship Board (LPF) and the police are also under the KDN.

“We will take the opinion of the deputy minister first, see what he says. This letter will also be sent to the Minister of Communications and Digital, Fahmi Fadzil,” he said.

Commenting on the Viu streaming platform that shows the film in question, Hafi explained that no police report was made against the company.

On the other hand, the Artist will write a letter to Viu to be more careful in publishing content, especially relating to religion.

Previously, the local indie film that was shown through the video streaming platform Viu invited criticism and anger from the public following some scenes that were allegedly against religious beliefs and beliefs.
