Police open investigation paper on podcast alleging drug den near Sentul IPD

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have opened an investigation paper regarding the spread of a viral video (podcast) claiming that there was drug trafficking activity at a house of worship near the Sentul District Police Headquarters (IPD) here.

Sentul District Police Chief ACP Anuar Bakri Abdul Salam said investigations were being conducted under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He said the investigation was initiated following a police report made by the chairman of the Marathadi Madurai Veeran Temple in Kuala Lumpur last Sunday to vehemently deny the allegations made in the video.

“After receiving instructions to investigate (OTI) from the Deputy Public Prosecutor, the police have called several witnesses to complete the investigation.

“This includes (podcast guest) Azrul Affandi Sobry who will be present at Sentul IPD at 12 noon tomorrow for the conversation recording process,” he said in a statement today.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus was previously reported to have said that the allegations raised through a video on the TikTok account @Sembangohhyeahh were actually referring to an incident 10 years ago.

He said a review found that the incident in question occurred on July 12, 2016, and the content of the podcast was merely a retelling of the experiences of the guest who was monitoring as a journalist at that time.

Fadil also stressed that such publicity was inappropriate because it could create a negative perception among the public regarding the level of police integrity and advised all parties to be more responsible in disseminating information.
