KUALA NERUS: The appointment of a new Opposition Leader will be decided before the Parliament sitting this June, said PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.
Speaking to reporters after the Dhuha Lecture here today, the Marang MP said the decision regarding the position would be finalised after comprehensive discussions involving all opposition parties.
He said there was enough time to make the decision given that the Dewan Rakyat session would only be held in June, with the current priority focused on resolving internal party matters as well as matters related to Perikatan Nasional.
“This matter needs to be discussed with all parties because it involves all opposition members of Parliament, not just one party.”
“We will take into account the views of all political parties and opposition members of Parliament, including those from Sabah and Sarawak. Candidates must have the consent of all component parties,” he said.
So far, the position of Opposition Leader is still held by Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who is also the Member of Parliament for Larut.
Meanwhile, Abdul Hadi reiterated the proposal for a special session of Parliament to be held to discuss the global energy crisis which is affecting the country’s economy.
He said the move was important because the issue affected all parties and required the comprehensive involvement of elected representatives in presenting their views on the crisis.
“We propose holding a special session of Parliament. Accept the views of all (representatives). That’s how it should be because we are in the same boat. That’s why we need to involve representatives in discussions in Parliament.
“Political differences need to be temporarily put aside to address this issue. All parties need to discuss together and it is not appropriate for the government to shoulder this responsibility alone,” he said.
Hamzah, in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition, has requested the government to hold a special session of the Dewan Rakyat to discuss the implications of the conflict in West Asia for Malaysia.
