MELAKA: Melaka does not have a solid basis to postpone the State Election (PRN) which is expected to be held this year in accordance with the State Constitution, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.
He said that based on the State Constitution, the term of the Barisan Nasional (BN)-led state government ends next December.
“Based on existing provisions, (state) elections can be held at any time starting from May until the end of that date (in December).
“And I don’t see the need to postpone this election, because the basis is not enough to support the proposal (to postpone),” he said when met by reporters after officiating the Enrique of Malacca Groundbreaking Ceremony here today.
Previously, Pontian MP Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan was reported to have said that he would bring a motion to postpone the Johor and Melaka state elections to the UMNO Supreme Council (MT) meeting, following the geopolitical crisis in West Asia.
Apart from that, Kota Melaka Member of Parliament Khoo Poay Tiong, who is also the state DAP chairman, suggested that the Melaka government submit a petition to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to declare a state of emergency to postpone the state’s general election, following the global supply crisis.
