adminKUALA LUMPUR: The People’s Justice Party (PKR) may be disappointed with its partners in the Unity Government following the recent state election results, but it needs to continue to focus on its own weaknesses that can still be improved.
PKR Political Bureau member Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said the party cannot control the actions of other parties, but instead needs to focus all its efforts on strengthening its own organisation.
“We may be disappointed with our friends in the Unity Government, but we cannot control other parties. What we can improve is our own party.”
“So, let’s focus all our energies on strengthening the party,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
The former Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) said this ahead of the PKR National Congress in Melaka, which he said was his first national congress since becoming a party member.
According to Tengku Zafrul, the recent state election results require PKR to conduct honest reflection, including assessing weaknesses, strengthening the organization and ensuring that the party machinery operates more effectively from the grassroots level to the central leadership.
He also admitted that the party needs to improve its way of communicating with the people if the results of the government’s efforts are still not visible or understood by the public.
“If the people have not seen the results we have worked for, the responsibility also lies with us to communicate more clearly and effectively,” he added.
At the same time, Tengku Zafrul reminded party members not to be too quick to respond to criticism and to the point of ignoring the need to understand the people’s concerns.
He said PKR needs to listen with an open heart, acknowledge the issues that have yet to be resolved and then fulfill its responsibilities to the people.
He hopes that this congress will be a platform for the party to reflect, close ranks and strengthen the organization in an effort to regain the people’s trust.
For the record, Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation from UMNO on May 30, 2025, including as a member of the Supreme Working Council and UMNO Kota Raja Division Chief, in addition to expressing his intention to join PKR.
On August 8 of the same year, he confirmed that his membership application had been accepted by the PKR Central Leadership Council (MPP) and was registered as a member of the Ampang PKR Branch.
On January 25, PKR MPPs agreed to appoint him as an Ex-Officio member of the PKR Political Bureau.
Apart from being the Minister of MITI, Tengku Zafrul previously served as the Minister of Finance from March 9, 2020 to November 9, 2022 and is currently the Senior Political Advisor to the Prime Minister, after being appointed to the position on March 4.
