Malcolm X’s family files suit against FBI, CIA and police
THE SON of the famous black activist, Malcolm X who was killed 58 years ago, has filed a notice to sue several law enforcement agencies over his father’s death.
Among those listed for the lawsuit include the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the New York police.
Ilyasah Shabazz claims that several federal agencies and bodies under the New York authorities deliberately concealed evidence of their involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate Malcolm X.
“For years, our family has been searching for the truth regarding his murder. We want our father to get the justice he deserves.
“The truth about the circumstances leading up to our father’s death is not only important to our family, but also to many of his followers, who turn to him as a guide.
“Our hope is that this litigation process will provide answers to previously unanswered questions. We want justice to be done for our father,” he said.
Shabaz is seeking US$100 million in damages.
The New York Police Department meanwhile declined to comment on the ongoing legal process.
Malcolm X gained popularity as the spokesman for the pro-Islamic movement known as the ‘Nation of Islam’.
He spent a decade with the movement, before allegedly starting to issue controversial racist statements.
Malcolm X was shot by three men while preparing to speak on a tour in New York on February 21, 1965.
After the incident, some parties claimed that government agencies knew about his assassination plan and allowed it to happen.
Nation of Islam member Talmadge Hayer later confessed in court to being one of the men who shot Malcolm X.
In 2021, a New York judge overturned the convictions of two more men found to have killed Malcolm X.
