Five ‘doctors’ among the 12 arrested for selling drugs in entertainment centers around KL

KUALA LUMPUR: Five ‘doctors’ are among the 12 arrested for being suspected of being involved in drug processing and trafficking activities at entertainment centers around the capital recently.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said the suspects consisting of 10 local men, one local woman and one foreign woman were arrested around the Klang Valley by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department in Kuala Lumpur and Bukit Aman through three operations from 7 to 9 February last.

He said the ‘doctor’ involved was responsible for mixing powder and liquid ketamine-type drugs into drinks before other members of the syndicate distributed them to entertainment centers in the capital at a price of RM300 per bottle.

“In the first operation (named) `Devon Rex,’ the police arrested six local men aged 22 to 39 and seized 21 kilograms (kg) of the drug ketamine estimated at RM1.2 million and 2kg of syabu worth RM72,000,” he told reporter here today.

“Following the arrest, the police carried out a second operation called “Breadnut” on Feb 8 and arrested five ‘doctors’, namely three local men, a local woman and a foreign woman aged 24 to 34 years.

“As a result of the raid, the police confiscated various types of drugs and cigarettes containing synthetic mushrooms, all estimated to be worth RM340,000,” he said.

Azmi said he then led the police to the third operation “Catclaw” which saw the seizure of one kilogram of ketamine worth RM55,000 and the arrest of another suspect, a 37-year-old local man.

He said the three syndicates that have been active for the past six months are carrying out drug trafficking activities separately but believe they are interrelated.

“Most users know their respective ‘doctors’ according to their needs. These doctors supposedly have their own prescriptions. They will buy the drugs in the entertainment premises and the police believe that after this, they may be bought outside the entertainment premises as well.

“In total, the police have confiscated various types of drugs worth RM2.1 million which are believed to be used by 253,000 addicts,” he said.

Azmi said 11 of the arrested individuals had criminal and drug-related past records and the case was investigated in accordance with Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
