adminKUALA LUMPUR: Popular singer and producer, Datuk Yusry Abdul Halim, emphasises that the ability to evolve with the times is the main key for an artist to remain relevant in the country’s music industry.
Yusry, who has been involved in the art world for 34 years, said that every artist who wants to last a long time in the industry must dare to make changes without setting aside their own identity.
He likens the development of music to fashion trends which are constantly changing and cannot remain at the same level for a long period of time.
“This music is actually like fashion. If I still sing in the old style, fans might abandon that style.
“However, these changes do not mean we have to completely eliminate our identity.
“We need to keep up with the times. To remain relevant, we really have to follow our own evolution, not just follow others so that people don’t get bored,” he told Astro AWANI on Monday.
He said this when met at the launch of the Launchpad platform in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
Commenting on his solo project, the member of the legendary KRU group explained that he is trying to find a new ‘branch’ in his music so that the work produced is different from the original material of the KRU group.
“Because if we do it KRU style, it’s better for us to do it (the performance) as KRU. So, the goal here is to find other branches so that there is still continuity with existing fans without alienating them,” he explained.
Yusry also believes his brothers, Norman and Edry, have the same thoughts if they intend to produce solo projects in the future.
Touching on his chosen genre, Yusry said that the roots of his songwriting remain centered around pop music, although he has often been associated with R&B and hip-hop before.
He revealed that some of the songs in his latest album, ‘Internal’, are demos from the KRU era that have been reworked with new musical arrangements to make them fresher and more in line with the album’s concept.
Apart from singing, Yusry also hinted that he will continue to be active in the fields of acting and directing with several future plans to be announced later.
