adminKUALA LUMPUR: The proposal to consider the position of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in the unity government is not a threat to the administration led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
On the other hand, Deputy Head of Strategy, UN SDSN Asia Headquarters, Sunway University, Prof Dr Wong Chin Huat said that the proposal was to finalise the party’s stance and organise its actions before facing the 16th General Election (GE16).
“We must see that the DAP congress in August is not intended to blackmail the government. This is because the main consideration of the DAP leaders is to ensure that the party is united and has one voice.
“One way is to have an open discussion on the pros and cons of remaining in or leaving the government. This ensures that a decision is made. If the delegates want to remain in the cabinet, then they cannot demand that the party behave like the opposition,” he said.
He said this in the AWANI Agenda program on Tuesday.
He added that if DAP decides to leave the government, then party members cannot complain about losing access to government resources and machinery.
On Monday, its Secretary-General, Anthony Loke, announced that DAP would determine its position in the government during the party’s National Conference, which is scheduled to be held on August 16.
He said a motion regarding the matter would be presented to delegates before being decided by the nearly 4,000 delegates who were eligible to attend the conference.
Anthony also stated that the conference would determine the future direction of DAP in the national political arena.
According to him, any decision on whether the party will remain in government or be outside the administration must be made collectively by the delegates.
