SHENZHEN: The world’s leading drone technology company, DJI, filed a lawsuit against Insta360 in the Shenzhen Intermediate Court for alleged infringement of six patents related to drone flight control technology, image processing and hardware design.
In the lawsuit, DJI asserted that the patents were legally their property because they were allegedly developed by former employees of the company within a year after they resigned, reported Amanz .
According to legal provisions in China, a company has the right to claim a patent if the innovation is produced by a former employee who transferred to a new company if it is directly related to the scope of their old duties.
However, Insta360 Founder, JK Liu, strongly denied the allegations and insisted that all of the disputed innovations were the result of his own team’s creativity and internal development.
Liu, in a counter-statement, also claimed that DJI had actually copied several of his company’s camera functions and accessories for use in the competitor’s products.
He added that Insta360 has identified at least 28 of their patents that could potentially be infringed by DJI products, but they have chosen not to take legal action at this time because they want to focus entirely on developing innovation rather than the litigation process.
The competition between these two Chinese technology giants is seen to be intensifying as both are now competing in the same market segment including drones, compact action cameras and microphone systems, especially after the launch of the Antigravity A1 drone by Insta360 which has just entered the Malaysian market.
