Sarawak state assembly to be dissolved this Monday?

KUCHING: The 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly is expected to be dissolved this Monday, to make way for the 13th Sarawak State Election.

According to sources, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to make an announcement on the matter at the Satria Pertiwi Complex in Kuching on Friday evening.

It is understood that on the morning of the same day, he will visit the Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar to request permission to dissolve the State Legislative Assembly.

Previously, the mystery surrounding the date had been discussed since before the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, which took place from October 12 to 21.

It is understood that the parties involved in the matter, especially the security forces and the Election Commission (EC), have been informed of the matter.

This election will see no increase in seats as the additional 17 seats approved at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly in 2025 are currently in the process of redelineation studies.

It is expected to take a year and has not yet been implemented.

The last time the Sarawak PRN was held was on December 18, 2021, which saw GPS win 76 out of 82 seats contested.

As of the State Legislative Assembly session that ended on Wednesday, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) which is made up of the United Bumiputera Party (PBB), Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Sarawak People’s Party (PRS) and the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) has 80 seats.

This is after the United Sarawak Party (PSB), which had four elected representatives, was dissolved and its members were absorbed en bloc into the PDP in 2025.

Another of its elected representatives, Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, previously announced his departure from the party to become an independent but GPS-friendly elected representative.
