PETALING JAYA: The celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Clean and Fair Election Coalition (BERSIH) is not just a space to remember the romantic history of the movement’s struggle, but rather a momentum to renew determination in strengthening the country’s democracy.
BERSIH chairman, Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz, said the celebration also aimed to fuel the spirit of struggle and mobilize greater efforts in fighting for clean, free and fair elections.
According to Muhammad Faisal, the achievements over the past two decades prove that the people’s struggle is capable of bringing about meaningful change.
“The BERSIH struggle is not just a movement demanding fair elections, but is also part of a larger effort to strengthen democracy, uphold justice and ensure a government that is more accountable to the people.”
“Throughout two decades of struggle, we have recorded significant achievements in nurturing democracy and improving the political governance system towards a better level, although we have not yet reached the desired level of perfection,” he said in a media statement on Thursday.
The 20th anniversary celebration of BERSIH is scheduled to take place on 21 November 2026 at The Godown Arts Centre, Kuala Lumpur, starting at 10am to 10pm.
Among the programme’s highlights are the ’20 Years of BERSIH: From Action to Action’ exhibition, experience sharing by the author of the book We BERSIH , Danny Lim, as well as the BERSIH 20th Anniversary Celebration Night.
BERSIH will also present the BERSIH Award for Democracy to organisations that have strongly supported civil society movements in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, BERSIH is also inviting the public to donate or lend memorabilia from previous demonstrations to be displayed in conjunction with the celebration.
