Malaysia Must Build Quantum Tech Capability Now – Chang

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) — Malaysia must build its capability in quantum technology starting now, particularly in talent development, research and development (R&D) and infrastructure, to ensure the country is ready to leverage this strategic technology in the future, says Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang.

He said building such capability requires years, even though quantum technology is not yet widely used.

“To utilise strategic technology, the country needs people who understand it. Scientists, engineers, researchers, software developers and industry players must build knowledge early. Technology can evolve rapidly, but talent cannot be built overnight,” he said in an Instagram post.

Chang said quantum technology harnesses the principles of quantum physics to develop new methods in computing, sensing and communication.

In quantum computing, the technology has the potential to help solve complex problems such as molecular simulation, materials discovery, system optimisation, drug development, and security and cryptography research.

However, Chang said the true potential of the technology depends on technological advancements and its practical application.

According to him, Malaysia does not necessarily need to develop all technologies on its own or chase every trend, but must possess the capability to understand, evaluate, adapt and develop technologies critical to the nation.

He said the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) is focusing on quantum technology as one of its strategic technological areas in 2026.

He added that discussions on the proposed establishment of the National Quantum and Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence (NQAIC) also focus on local talent development, R&D, infrastructure, and exploring relevant use cases.
