Malacca PRN: PH expected to contest 18 to 21 seats

MELAKA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) is expected to contest between 18 and 21 State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats in the Melaka State Election (PRN), said PH Election Director Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

He, who is also the Menteri Besar of Selangor, said the final decision regarding the distribution of seats was, however, subject to the instructions of the central leadership, particularly the PH Presidential Council.

“That is almost certain. 18 at the least, 21 at the most. However, if circumstances force us to, we may contest 28 seats,” he said at a press conference after opening the Melaka PH Main Operations Room in Bukit Baru here today.

Also present were Melaka PH chairman Adly Zahari, Melaka DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong and Melaka Amanah Negara (Amanah) chairman Datuk Ashraf Mukhlis Minghat.

Amirudin said PH Melaka was prepared to face various possibilities, whether it would contest solo, form a collaboration with other parties or form a larger coalition, depending on the decision of the central leadership.

Regarding the selection of candidates, Amirudin said the list was being finalized by the respective component parties and was expected to be announced in about a week.

He said the date of the official announcement would be adjusted according to the schedule of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also PH chairman, with notice given at least three or four days before the event.

Regarding negotiations with Barisan Nasional (BN), Amirudin said the matter was still under consideration by the top leadership and he refused to make any preliminary assumptions before an official decision was finalised.

Yesterday, the Election Commission set Nov 14 as the polling day for the 16th Melaka state election, with nominations on Oct 31 and early voting on Nov 10.

The 2021 Malacca state election saw BN win 21 out of 28 state seats to form the state government while PH secured five seats and Perikatan Nasional two seats.
