KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO’s call to expedite the 16th General Election (GE16) on the grounds of the people’s will is likely overshadowed by certain motives, especially to prevent more of its leaders, including those from the Barisan Nasional (BN) component, from being entangled in Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) cases.
Selangor Justice Youth Force (AMK) chief Muhammad Iman Haziq Mohammad Hamizi said that AMK saw no need to accelerate GE16 because the MADANI government’s term would only end in November 2027 and the country was being managed very well by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Therefore, he said, UMNO’s motive for pushing for an early general election has no solid reason other than their greed for power and fear that more BN leaders will be brought to court for their past administrative misconduct.
“AMK firmly supports the MADANI government’s stance of wanting to end its five-year term with continued hard work to improve the country with viable economic and social policies, in addition to the anti-sakau campaign,” he said in a statement today.
Speaking at the UMNO General Assembly (PAU) 2026 a few days ago, UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reiterated the call for the 16th general election to be expedited , while signaling that the party is ready to form a new political partnership when ‘blue’ meets ‘green’.
AMK Malaysia’s Information Chief, Danish Hairuddin, previously explained that Ahmad Zahid needs to clear his name in court first before aspiring to become the 11th Prime Minister after the upcoming GE16.
He said the public is still aware that there is a legal process regarding the decision to be released without acquittal (DNAA) in connection with the Yayasan Akalbudi case against the UMNO President.
Meanwhile, UMNO Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, is of the view that the 16th General Election should be expedited because the current government administration has entered the “election season”.
He said, ‘election season’ refers to the period after three years of a government’s administration that allows elections to be held, even though the maximum five-year period for a Parliament has not yet ended.
