IPOH: MIC, which has now reached the age of 80, remains relevant in the country’s political landscape as an important platform for preserving the social contract and harmony between the races.
Its president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran said the party played a role as a platform that allowed leaders of all races to sit at the table to discuss the interests of the people based on the Federal Constitution.
“We can sit around the table and discuss what is best for all races according to the social contract, the Constitution that we have gone through since independence,” he told reporters after officiating the MIC Family Day Celebration in conjunction with the MIC’s 80th Anniversary here today.
Apart from that, he said MIC remained loyal to Barisan Nasional (BN) even though it currently did not hold any positions in the federal administration or state government.
Regarding preparations for the Johor State Election (PRN), Vigneswaran said negotiations on seat distribution had been carried out together with BN component parties, but left it entirely to the discretion of the top leadership.
Regarding today’s celebration, he said it was held simultaneously throughout the country involving all MIC divisions through various activities including religious ceremonies.
He said the content of the program showed that MIC was once again strengthening its ties with the grassroots, as has been the practice for the past several decades, to ensure that the party is always close to its members and the people.
