225 applications received to implement Film Community Workshop, creative industry – Teo

KULAI: A total of 225 applications have been received from associations and companies to implement Film Community and Creative Youth Workshops since November last year, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.

He said that of the total, 60 applications were approved with 32 programmes successfully implemented involving 960 youths as of March 31.

“The response received shows great potential among youth, and this programme will continue until December 2027 with a target of 240 locations nationwide,” he said when opening the workshop here today.

The workshop, which lasted for three days starting today, brought together 30 participants under the age of 30 and they were exposed to various learning modules such as storytelling, script development, acting, camera angle techniques and creative editing.

Teo said this workshop was part of the MADANI Community Creative Youth Programme which was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim through Budget 2025 with an allocation of RM12 million to strengthen the development of creative human capital throughout the country.

He said that of this amount, the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS) has allocated RM3 million for the implementation of the programme nationwide since November 2025.

Teo also said the creative industry would contribute nearly RM130.7 billion or 6.8 percent to the Gross Domestic Product in 2024, up from 4.5 percent the previous year.

He said more than 70 percent of digital content creators are youths aged between 18 and 35, and FINAS is collaborating with the Skills Development Department to implement the Recognition of Prior Achievements to enable creative industry players to obtain the Malaysian Skills Certificate.

Teo said 50 creative industry players successfully received the certificate last year.

“For this year, the program will continue with an additional target of 50 more local industry players to be certified, which is expected to be implemented in the second quarter of 2026,” he said.
