PUTRAJAYA: The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed his appreciation to Malaysia for its commitment and active involvement in international health issues, as well as its constructive role in strengthening global cooperation based on solidarity.
The Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH) in a statement today announced that the award was presented in conjunction with Dr Tedros’ official visit to Malaysia, which reflects the close, strategic and ongoing collaborative relationship between Malaysia and WHO in strengthening the preparedness and resilience of the health system.
According to the statement, the visit also brought direct positive implications for Malaysians in terms of prevention, preparedness and public health response, particularly through the ongoing Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing negotiations under the Intergovernmental Working Group.
The collaboration also strengthens the country’s preparedness and early warning system against infectious disease threats through negotiations on amendments to the International Health Regulations and the Pandemic Agreement.
“This effort ensures that Malaysia is faster to detect and respond to any future health crisis, thus minimizing disruption to economic activities and the social well-being of the people,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad stressed that Malaysia’s active involvement at the WHO level is to ensure that the voices of the country’s people continue to be given attention in the global health landscape.
Malaysia remains committed to continuing to work with the WHO to ensure that the country’s health system is always at the highest level, inclusive and ready to face any global health challenges for the well-being of the people.
