adminNEW YORK, Sept 22 (Bernama-dpa) — UN Secretary General António Guterres on Tuesday called for a more responsible approach to artificial intelligence, warning against the development of autonomous weapons, reported German news agency dpa.
“Life-and-death decisions must never be surrendered to machines,” he warned in a speech that kicked off the high-level week of the UN General Assembly in New York, attended by leaders from around the world.
“Killer robots must have no place in our future,” Guterres said.
Artificial intelligence has the potential to advance medicine and science, he said, while calling criticizing inadequate oversight and opaque decision-making.
“The danger is not technology,” he said. “The danger is technology without accountability.”
Guterres called on countries with the greatest AI capabilities to work together to develop safety standards, increase transparency around risks and establish independent oversight mechanisms.
He also called on countries to end the conflict in West Asia.
“So-called ceasefires have amounted to little more than ‘lesser fire’ – with civilians continuing to pay the price,” Guterres said. “Enough is enough.”
