LAS VEGAS: Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed that the film Top Gun 3 is now in the production phase, with Tom Cruise set to reprise his iconic role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
The announcement was made during the studio’s presentation at the CinemaCon 2026 convention, here, Thursday.
Paramount also announced that the script for the third film in the franchise is being written by Ehren Kruger, who was previously involved as a co-writer for Top Gun: Maverick .
Veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer is once again helming the project, while Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is reportedly in talks to return to direct, but has not been officially confirmed.
Storyline details are still under wraps, but industry analysts expect this third film to highlight Maverick’s challenges in the world of modern military aviation, which is increasingly influenced by new technology, as the global warfare landscape changes.
In addition to Cruise, several actors from the previous sequels, such as Miles Teller and Glen Powell, have also been mentioned as potential returnees, but an official announcement regarding the cast list has not yet been made. A release date has also not been set.
Paramount’s decision to continue the franchise follows the huge success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, which grossed approximately US$1.5 billion (approximately RM5.93 billion) globally, making it the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise’s career.
