KUALA LUMPUR: The Puteri UMNO movement is calling for young women to be given the space and power to make decisions within the party and national leadership, and to no longer be considered merely as the driving force behind the machinery or ‘singers’ of campaigns.
Puteri UMNO Movement chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi said it was time for political discourse to shift from merely touching on women’s participation to genuine recognition in decision-making at all levels of administration.
“Young women are not just needed to move the machinery, not just to fill the halls and not just to be the face of the campaign. We must be given the space to lead.
“From branches to divisions, from organisations to administration, and from the grassroots to the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) and Parliament,” he said when delivering a policy speech in conjunction with the UMNO 2026 General Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here, on Thursday.
Nurul Amal stressed that the demand for 30 percent female participation cannot continue to be just rhetoric or a number repeated in speeches, but rather needs to be translated into real opportunities.
In this regard, he urged the party leadership to give due space to young women who are capable and accepted by the people to be put forward as candidates when the time comes for the next election.
“Not because they are young women, but because they have the ability to lead,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, Nurul Amal also made a direct appeal to the party leadership, especially the UMNO President, not to ignore the proposals raised by the wing.
He explained that every proposal brought by Puteri UMNO is a reflection of the pulse and voice of the grassroots which has its own credibility and value, and is not just a filler for the conference agenda.
“We brought the motion not just to fulfill the conference agenda, but far from just to become a note that is later forgotten.”
“Therefore, sincerely and honestly, I call on the party leadership to ensure that Puteri’s views and voice, which were raised as a proposal before, are given due attention and answers,” he said.
