Najib has not explained RM50 million fine, no specific payment period – Attorney General

KOTA BHARU: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has yet to pay the RM50 million fine based on the latest information received by the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC).

Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said there was no specific period set for the payment of the fine.

“So far, the information we have received has not been fulfilled by Datuk Seri Najib. So far,” he told reporters after attending the launch of the Attorney General’s Chambers MADANI Adoption School at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pasir Hor, here, today.

Asked whether Najib would still have to serve his prison sentence as long as the fine had not been paid, Mohd Dusuki confirmed the matter.

On Sept 18, the media reported that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim had granted a conditional pardon to Najib, with him serving the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028.

The order is subject to Najib paying a fine of RM50 million.

The Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department announced that the order was decided at the 64th Pardon Board Meeting for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya held at Istana Negara.

In July 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court sentenced Najib to 12 years in prison and a fine of RM210 million, after he was found guilty of embezzling RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd funds, and the sentence was later upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2021 and the Federal Court in August 2022.

However, through its 61st meeting on Jan 29, 2024, the Pardon Board decided that the former Pekan MP’s prison sentence was reduced from 12 years to six years and the fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.

Meanwhile, on Dec 26 last year, the High Court sentenced the former prime minister to 15 years in prison and a fine of RM11.4 billion after he was found guilty of four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving RM2.3 billion from 1MDB funds.

He filed an appeal on Dec 29, 2025.

In the civil case, the High Court on March 31 ordered Najib to repay USD1.3 billion to SRC International after it was found that he had breached fiduciary duties, abused his position and misappropriated company funds for personal gain, but the payment was postponed pending the outcome of the appeal.

Najib is also facing two other lawsuits, one each by SRC International and Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd in 2021, as well as a USD5.64 billion civil suit by 1MDB and its four subsidiaries, which are still in court proceedings.
