adminALOR GAJAH: Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidates in the Melaka State Election (PRN) on Nov 14 need to build a solid campaign machinery and not just rely on their community service record to gain voter support.
PKR vice-president Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said an excellent record in looking after the welfare of the people was not enough if the candidate did not have a team capable of helping to effectively run the campaign.
He said a strong machinery was important to ensure that candidates could reach voters in various locations, as they could not be in all places at the same time.
“This is my personal view, which is that candidates need a strong machinery. When campaigning, we can’t be in 10 places at the same time.”
“So candidates need to start forming a large and strong team to help move campaigns in various locations,” he told reporters after attending the HRD Corp ‘Pocket Talk’ Tour Series Programme – From Policy to People here today.
The program was also attended by HRD Corp Chief Executive Officer Datuk Shamir Aziz.
The Sungai Buloh MP said candidates need to change their old approach of only relying on their own efforts without building a support machinery, but instead adapt to current political challenges.
Ramanan said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also emphasised the importance of choosing candidates who are diligent in going to the field, who are sympathetic to the people and who are accepted by the community.
He said the selection of PH candidates also takes into account credibility aspects, including going through a strict screening process that involves checking criminal records and financial status to ensure that candidates meet the set criteria.
The Election Commission has set Oct 31 as nomination day, Nov 10 for early voting and Nov 14 as polling day for the Melaka state general election.
The 2021 Melaka state election saw Barisan Nasional win 21 out of 28 State Legislative Assembly seats to form the state government, while PH secured five seats and Perikatan Nasional two seats.
