adminKUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 – UMNO insists that cooperation in the Unity Government does not mean the party is handing over its future, identity or principles of struggle to any party.
Instead, the collaboration was formed on the basis of trust to ensure administrative stability in the interests of Malaysians as a whole.
“Cooperation in governing the country does not mean surrendering the future of the party. Cooperation is not surrender. I repeat, cooperation is not surrender,” he said when speaking at the winding up session of the UMNO 2026 General Assembly, here today.
Ahmad Zahid said that UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) joined the collaboration with a stance to maintain the party’s identity as well as continue to adhere to the principles of struggle.
“Without losing identity, negotiate without sacrificing principles, seek similarities while respecting differences,” he said.
According to him, the formation of the Unity Government also needs to be seen based on the basis of support that formed the government after the 15th General Election (GE15).
He said that PH at that time had 82 seats while UMNO and BN had 30 seats, making the support base 112 seats.
He also claimed that three Members of Parliament who were then PKR members had left the party, thus affecting the original figures.
“Although the number of seats with the current Unity Government is more than a simple majority, it is an addition to the existing base.”
“If we here are eliminated, logically the base of 112 seats will also be gone. So a new mandate must be obtained,” he said.
He said that if there are parties who want to end cooperation with UMNO, there are two options that can be made, namely regaining the people’s mandate through the general election or officially expelling UMNO and submitting a vote of no confidence in the Dewan Rakyat.
“There are only two options… one, regain the mandate of the general public. Second, officially expel us and hold a vote of no confidence in the Dewan Rakyat.”
“If you dare, do it quickly. If you dare, disperse quickly,” he said, greeted by chants of disperse… disperse… disperse from the delegates at the Merdeka Hall.
He also reminded that the cooperation to form the Unity Government was based on the trust of the nation and in compliance with the orders of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“The main goal of UMNO and BN is to ensure the stability of the country’s administration for the benefit of the people, not to sacrifice the party’s struggle. Our cooperation is based on the trust of the nation, in obedience to the command of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.”
“What is our intention? UMNO and BN want to create administrative stability for the benefit of Malaysians as a whole,” he said.
He also reminded those who are challenging UMNO to leave the Unity Government not to make such demands arbitrarily.
“Don’t ask us to leave the government. They will challenge us to leave the government if they dare,” he said.
According to him, the formation of the Malaysian Unity Government cannot be separated from the role and support of UMNO, including the party’s support for the Prime Minister.
