KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) — The RM15 billion investment to strengthen the National Grid, highlighted in Budget 2027, will enhance the capacity of the country’s electricity supply system to meet growing demand.
In a statement today, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) said the allocation is part of its RM43 billion investment for the 2025-2027 period to strengthen and modernise the National Grid.
The upgrades will also support the growth of the digital economy and artificial intelligence (AI), which require a stable electricity supply, including for the operation of large-scale data centres.
“Through initiatives such as the Green Lane Pathway, TNB supports efforts to streamline and expedite the development of electricity supply infrastructure for data centre projects,” it said.
TNB said the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) and Green Electricity Tariff (GET) also provide industries with options to meet their renewable energy requirements.
For domestic consumers, the utility company welcomed the extension of the electricity bill protection threshold from monthly consumption of 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to 800 kWh until Dec 31 this year, as announced on Sept 17.
TNB said the measure is expected to benefit more than eight million domestic consumers, or up to 90 per cent of all domestic consumers.
The company also supported the installation of solar-powered streetlights in villages and rooftop solar panels at welfare homes and places of worship, as well as improvements to electricity supply at tahfiz schools, pondok (religious schools) and Orang Asli villages.
TNB also pledged to heed the government’s call to expedite rural electricity supply projects to expand community access to a better electricity supply.
In efforts to empower the Bumiputera economy, TNB said more than RM11 billion has been channelled under the Bumiputera Vendor Development Programme 3.0 (PV 3.0) as of June, benefiting more than 1,200 vendors.
In line with the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (PuTERA35), TNB will continue to support the participation of Bumiputera companies in renewable energy projects, grid strengthening and green technology.
TNB also reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) to achieve the net-zero carbon emissions target as well as the aspiration to achieve 70 per cent renewable energy generation capacity by 2050.
These efforts include investments in large-scale solar initiatives, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and the Hydro Life Extension Programme (HLEP).
At the regional level, TNB will continue to play its role in the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) project, which has the potential to expand cross-border energy sharing and strengthen energy supply security.
Meanwhile, TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shamsul Ahmad said the company’s priority is to ensure every household enjoys a safe and reliable electricity supply, while providing businesses with the energy they need to grow.
“As the national electricity utility provider, TNB accepts this responsibility with the utmost integrity. We will continue to work closely with the government and stakeholders to ensure that the development of the country’s energy system benefits the people, supports economic growth and leaves a more sustainable future for generations to come,” he said.
