SYDNEY: Iconic Australian rock band Powderfinger have announced their first concert tour in 17 years after their breakup, delighting fans who have been eagerly awaiting the band’s comeback.
The Brisbane-based band kicks off the tour with four shows in their hometown in September next year before continuing with concerts in Cairns, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne.
All performances will take place in a giant stadium-sized tent.
In a statement on Monday, the members of Powderfinger said they were excited to be back on stage after such a long time.
“Over the years, many have suggested we return to touring, but until now the right time has not arrived for all the band members.
“We greatly appreciate the continued support of our old fans as well as the new generation who have never had the opportunity to see us perform live,” the band said.
Powderfinger is one of Australia’s most successful rock bands with seven studio albums, including Odyssey Number Five, which was voted the best Australian album of all time by listeners of radio station Triple J in 2011.
Among their popular songs are My Happiness, These Days, Sunsets and On My Mind.
Since the band’s disbandment, vocalist Bernard Fanning has pursued a solo career, while bassist John Collins has been involved in the development of several major music venues in Brisbane.
So far, no performances outside of Australia have been announced.
