Actress Selma Blair charged with assaulting nurse and police officer after plane incident

NEW YORK: Hollywood actress Selma Blair is facing two additional assault charges after allegedly kicking a police officer and a nurse following an incident on a flight from Los Angeles to New York.

The 54-year-old Legally Blonde star was previously arrested on Sunday night after allegedly assaulting flight crew on a Delta airline flight en route to New York.

According to authorities, Blair also received a federal summons on charges of committing an attack on an aircraft under the exclusive jurisdiction of the United States.

Two additional charges filed in state court relate to incidents that allegedly occurred after he was removed from the plane.

Prosecutors allege one of the attacks occurred as Blair was being taken to hospital in an ambulance, when he allegedly kicked a police officer. After arriving at the hospital, he also allegedly attacked a nurse.

However, the actor pleaded not guilty to all charges.

His lawyer, Shawn Barnes, during the proceedings in Queens court asked the court to consider his client’s career record and insisted that violence was not the actor’s true nature.

He also described Blair as an individual who was an example to many and called him the “gold standard”.

However, the judge rejected the request for leniency and insisted that the actor should not receive special treatment just because of his celebrity status.

The court set bail at US$20,000 (RM84,000) in cash or US$60,000 (RM252,000) bond, with the case scheduled for mention on January 19.

Blair’s representative previously informed the media that the actress was experiencing a medical emergency which allegedly led to the behavior.

As the plane landed in New York on Sunday night, airport authorities received a report of a passenger acting physically aggressively.

Two cabin crew were reportedly injured in the incident, with one of them requiring hospital treatment.

Air traffic control communications footage obtained by local media also showed the pilot requesting medical assistance, citing injuries such as a bloody nose and bite marks.

In addition to Legally Blonde, Blair is also known for her roles in Cruel Intentions and Hellboy. The federal case related to the alleged assault on the plane is still awaiting a trial date.
