KLUANG: DAP has announced young lawyer, Chu Poh Yee, 33, as its first candidate for the Johor State Election (PRN) to defend the Mengkibol State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seat.
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the announcement saw the incumbent of the seat, Chew Chong Sin, who had served for two terms, shifting direction to make way for a new face.
“Because we have identified that the incumbent of this constituency (Chew) has the potential to be put forward as a candidate for the parliamentary constituency, and coincidentally, the current Labis Member of Parliament (Pang Hok Liong) has expressed his intention not to contest, he will be nominated for the Labis Parliament in the next General Election,” he said at the announcement ceremony for the candidate, here tonight.
Also present was Johor DAP Chairman Teo Nie Ching.
Loke said the party leadership agreed to choose Chu to fill the vacancy as he has an excellent record in helping local elected representatives handle cases related to legal aid.
“We feel that he is a winnable candidate and has quality in terms of education and language proficiency. Most importantly, he has close ties to the Mengkibol area.
“This is in line with the party’s desire to provide more opportunities for female candidates,” he said.
Meanwhile, Loke also confirmed that the party’s selection committee has finalised the list of DAP candidates to contest in 17 state seats in this Johor state election.
He said the total includes 10 incumbent seats, including the Mengkibol state seat, four lost seats that will be contested again, as well as three additional seats.
“This Saturday I will announce four more candidates for the Tiram, Johor Jaya, Senai, and Bukit Permai state seats.
“The rest will be announced together with the other Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidates this Monday, which will be announced by the Prime Minister,” he said.
