PUCHONG: Weeroc Space achieved a significant milestone when it successfully performed a tapeout , marking a critical step in the transition from chip design to manufacturing process.
The semiconductor innovator company, supported by the Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park, said the success reflects Malaysia’s growing capabilities not only in manufacturing, but also in designing and developing advanced semiconductor technology.
Weeroc Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Salleh Ahmad, said the achievement is a significant moment for the fabless company as it marks the end of an intensive design and validation process.
“This marks the completion of the chip design phase, when the final plan is sent to the fabrication facility for production, an achievement that all fabless semiconductor companies aspire to as it represents the culmination of a comprehensive design effort.
“After that, the team will wait for the manufactured chip to go through the testing and characterization process, before being integrated into their product.”
“It is very important considering that only a few companies are able to perform tapeouts of their own products and we are among the companies in Malaysia that have that capability,” he said.
Tapeout refers to the stage where a semiconductor design is finalized and sent to a fabrication facility, thus marking readiness for production and commercialization.
This stage is considered one of the most critical in the semiconductor lifecycle because it shows that the design has gone through a rigorous verification process before being translated into a physical chip.
Any mistakes at this stage can cause costly delays, making accuracy and a thorough verification process a top priority in chip development.
For Weeroc Space, this achievement not only validates the company’s engineering capabilities, but also strengthens its commercial position by enabling more confident engagement with customers and accelerating the introduction of new products to the market.
More broadly, such successes also reflect the growing maturity of Malaysia’s semiconductor ecosystem, including the strengthening of innovation chains, technical expertise and global competitiveness.
Weeroc Space also acknowledges the support of ecosystem partners who played a key role in achieving this success, including X-FAB which provides access to advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
In addition, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) also contributes to talent development and research, while Cadence Design Systems provides the environment and design tools that are critical in IC development.
This collaboration reflects the strength of the collaborative ecosystem that supports semiconductor innovation in Malaysia.
At the same time, Weeroc Space is expected to continue to expand its product pipeline , thus increasing the demand for skilled labor in the field of advanced IC design.
The move is also in line with the company’s commitment to empowering local talent through collaborations with institutions such as the University of Malaya, UiTM, APU and UKM, including the implementation of skills enhancement programmes and postgraduate pathways.
