adminARAU, Aug 4 (Bernama) — Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is producing almost 2,000 graduates annually to meet the needs of the electrical and electronics (E&E) and semiconductor industries, strengthening the future workforce in these key sectors.
UniMAP Vice-Chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Zaliman Sauli said the university is committed to supporting the national agenda under the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), which aims to produce 60,000 skilled workers and engineers by 2030.
“Graduate Employability (GE) data for 2024 and 2025 shows that over 30 per cent of UniMAP graduates started their careers in the E&E sector,” he said during the From Semiconductor Policy to Industry Forum: Driving Northern Malaysia’s Transformation Towards a Global Technology Powerhouse at UniMAP today.
Zaliman said semiconductors are now central to the global digital economy, powering technologies ranging from smartphones and artificial intelligence (AI) to electric vehicles and data centres.
He said Malaysia is now recognised as the world’s sixth-largest semiconductor exporter, contributing seven per cent of global chip trade and holding a 13 per cent share of the global Assembly, Testing and Packaging (ATP) market.
Zaliman said UniMAP would continue to enhance partnerships aimed at building a talent pipeline for the country’s semiconductor sector through initiatives including Industry-on-Campus, Industry Advisory Panels, International Adjunct Professors and industry-recognised professional certification programmes.
“We believe close collaboration between the government, industry and universities is key to ensuring Malaysia remains a competitive semiconductor hub globally,” he said.
The panel featured former International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mustapa Mohamed, Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) Chief Executive Datuk Mohamad Haris Kader Sultan, and Micron Technology Inc Malaysia’s Head of Government and Public Affairs Ahmed Zaki Moten.
