adminKUALA LUMPUR: “ The moment Parliament is dissolved, we are no longer with them (the Unity Government).”
This is the assertion of Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding the party’s commitment period with the Unity Government which will end when the 15th Parliament is dissolved.
According to Ahmad Zahid, BN has decided to be with the Unity Government after the 15th General Election (GE15) and will remain with that commitment until the end of the term.
“In complex circumstances, we want a fixed compass. BN made a decision with the government after GE15, our commitment is to remain in the government until the end of the 15th term.”
“When Parliament is dissolved, we will no longer be with them. This is our promise,” he said when delivering the keynote address at the 18th Annual General Meeting of the Parti Makkal Sakti Malaysia at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), today.
He explained that the commitment was BN’s promise to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and was sealed through the formation of the Unity Government.
However, Ahmad Zahid stressed that cooperation in the government did not mean BN was giving up its identity or ceasing to have its own stance.
According to him, the cooperation is at the national level, while the political approach in each state is not necessarily the same.
He cited the example of Johor when BN chose to contest the state election on its own despite collaborating with other parties at the Federal level.
“This is what I call two-window politics. At the federal or national level there is responsibility and at the state level there is political reality,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid stressed that political developments in Negeri Sembilan will not change BN’s commitment to the Unity Government at the Federal level.
