Selangor state assembly session in turmoil over Opposition Leader position

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session was briefly disrupted when a dispute arose regarding the status of the position of Opposition Leader during the opening oral question session on Tuesday.

The uproar erupted when Seri Serdang State Assemblyman (ADUN), Abbas Salimmi Che Adzmi @ Azmi, interrupted by questioning the position of Hulu Klang State Assemblyman (ADUN), Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali as Leader of the Opposition.

The situation became tense when several other assemblymen also intervened, including Taman Medan assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin, who questioned compliance with the assembly rules.

Selangor State Assembly Speaker, Lau Weng San, several times instructed all elected representatives to remain calm and give him time to explain the matter.

“Your Honor, calm down. This is not a debate. Sit down and listen first,” he said.

In his explanation, Weng San stressed that until now the Speaker’s Office and the Selangor State Legislative Assembly have not received any official information regarding the change in the position of Opposition Leader.

“The determination of the position will be made according to existing standing rules, namely being elected from among the members of the Opposition House,” he explained.

Weng San also stressed that any speculation or unconfirmed allegations should not be raised in official council sessions.

“Until today, the position of Leader of the Opposition is still held by the Honorable from Hulu Klang,” he said.
