RON95 Price Reduced to RM1.99 for Eligible Motorists – PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today that the retail price of RON95 petrol will be reduced to RM1.99 per litre for eligible motorists, down from the current price of RM2.05 per litre, as part of the government’s fuel subsidy retargeting initiative.

Speaking during a national broadcast, Anwar did not disclose further details or a timeline for the plan’s implementation, noting only that a more comprehensive announcement will be made by the end of September.

While the government successfully removed blanket subsidies on diesel last year, efforts to reform subsidies on RON95 — the most widely used fuel grade in Malaysia — have been politically sensitive. Economists and rating agencies have criticized the continued broad subsidy policy as fiscally unsustainable, especially in the face of persistent budget deficits.

Despite this, Anwar emphasized that the new approach would not burden ordinary citizens.

He said the reduced RON95 price is expected to benefit approximately 18 million motorists, and that those not eligible — including foreign nationals — will have to pay the unsubsidised market price.

“This targeted approach is aligned with the government’s strategy to optimise national resources, curb subsidy leakage, and ensure that aid reaches the right groups,” Anwar stated.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to balancing fiscal responsibility with protecting the welfare of the people.
