Respect the Flag: Jalur Gemilang Must Unite, Not Divide
Kuala Lumpur, 10 August — Malaysians must be more sensitive and aware of how the Jalur Gemilang, the national flag is displayed, as it represents national pride and unity—not a source of conflict or division.
This call was made by Syaheera Ghafar, Assistant National Publicity Secretary of the Democratic Action Party Youth (DAPSY), who urged all parties, regardless of background, to be more mindful of the correct positioning and portrayal of the national flag.
“Whether intentional or not, negligence, carelessness, insensitivity, or mistakes can no longer be accepted as common occurrences when it comes to handling the Jalur Gemilang,” she said.
Syaheera highlighted that reported incidents involving the national flag are not limited to any particular race or religion.
“These errors know no bounds. But let us strive to be individuals who are more aware, more sensitive when displaying or hoisting the Jalur Gemilang,” she added.
She also expressed concern over the impact of social media in escalating such matters.
“In today’s viral culture, everyone wants to share incidents on social media immediately, often without verifying the facts or correcting things privately through education. What matters most seems to be going viral first, and voicing personal opinions.”
Syaheera further criticised those who deliberately sensationalise the issue by reposting old videos or reports without clarifying that the content is outdated.
This, she warned, can lead to misunderstandings and provides an opening for certain politicians to exploit the situation with racially charged remarks, which in turn undermines national unity.
“These actions tarnish the dignity of the Jalur Gemilang and entangle it in unnecessary controversies and political blame games, ultimately steering it away from its original purpose,” she stressed.
“The Jalur Gemilang is the name of our national flag. It should be upheld as a symbol of honour, unity, and harmony in our country, not dragged into disputes or become a point of division within society.”
