Northeast Monsoon starts from October 27 to March 2027 – MetMalaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Northeast Monsoon (MTL) is expected to begin on October 27 and continue until March 2027, with three to five episodes of continuous heavy rain predicted to occur throughout the early phase of the monsoon.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) in a statement on Friday announced that the heavy rain episode is expected to occur between November 2026 and January 2027 and has the potential to cause flooding in areas near rivers and low-lying areas.

“During MTL, winds usually blow consistently from the northeast which can cause rough seas and increase the risk of sea level rise in the waters of the South China Sea,” the statement explained.

The statement further clarified that towards the final phase of the MTL, which is from January to March 2027, rainfall is expected to decrease, especially in the northern states of the Peninsula and Sabah.

“This situation will cause hot and dry weather and the potential for more extreme heat waves due to the influence of the very strong (Super) El Niño phenomenon,” the statement explained.

In this regard, the public is advised to prepare for weather conditions throughout the 2026/2027 MTL by always being aware of information, forecast advice and weather warnings issued by MET Malaysia.
